Sketch Your Story (Survey/Resource)

“I used to believe in this one Korean superstition that said if you write a person’s name in red three times in a row, they’ll die.  Anything that has to do with death, I’ll hold on to… but not anymore.”

Sketch Your Story is a website resource designed by Epic staff Chrissy Reyes, to help facilitate deeper conversations among students.  Feel free to use it, or start your own, for use on your campus or community.  Here’s how it works, straight from Chrissy:

“Sketches is a site I created for my students because I noticed how eager many of them are to dive into deeper conversations with their friends.  The desire is there, but they don’t always know how to start those talks, so I wanted to give them an excuse to ask bolder questions.  I was thinking a bit of the Post Secret project, if you’ve heard of that, except that I wanted to be able to hear people’s stories and backgrounds.  I also thought it would be fun to compile these backgrounds so that a reader can browse through and see how diverse people’s world views can really be.

“As I have given this site to my students to use, I’ve noticed that they’ve mostly chosen a question from the list on the site and answered it themselves, then reblogged it to their own tumblr.  I think that that’s a pretty cool way to share your testimony or what God’s been doing in your life, so I might start encouraging people to do that more.  It seems like it’s a little easier for them to share with their friends when it’s part of another project.  Ideally, though, students would talk to friends who they don’t know very well and use the questions to open up deeper conversations.  There’s a submit button with instructions on the site so that everything can stay anonymous.”

And for more, the site’s “About” page:

“Sketches is a project designed to help you understand the people around you at a deeper level. But it doesn’t stop there. People everywhere can benefit from hearing about people’s actual lives. It’s so easy for us to make assumptions about what kind of people are around us, and nothing breaks those assumptions like true stories. So after you’re done talking to someone, come back to this site and post the story you heard — a sketch of the person’s life. It doesn’t have to be a written story. You can draw something, choose one word to sum it all up, take a photo, whatever you want. Just come forward and share that person’s story with us, because by doing so you become a part of their story as well.”
